WHEN: Baisakhi (April/ May)

Akshay Tritiya falls on the third day of the Shukla Paksh in the month of Baisakh. On this day, the doors of the holy temple of Badrinath Dhaam are open for pilgrims. In Vrindavan, pilgrims are fortunate to have darshan of Shri Bihariji’s (Shri Krishna’s) charan. His shringar is done with sandalwood. This darshan can be done only on this day in the entire year.

A holy dip in Gangaji on Aakha Teej releases a person from the effect of his wrong-doings. This is an auspicious day to start any important work as it is believed to result in fruitfulness. This day is considered as Anbujh Muhurt. Marriage, the birth of a child – any celebration can be done on this day without consulting the panchang.

WHAT: Preparation for the puja

• Moong dal, rice khichdi, amlaana made of tamarind
• Seedha, matka with water, sugar, rice, dal, salt, ghee, sugar, vegetables, imli / tamarind and dakshina of fan and shoes
• Tulsi leaves, mishri, soaked chana dal, lime shikanji and sherbet

HOW: Method of performing puja

• In the morning, moong dal, khichdi and amlaana is prepared. Shikanji and sherbet are offered to people. On this day, neither papads are roasted nor is any food item deep fried.
• Seedha is given to the Brahmin. Offering shoes and fans has special significance.
• Badrinarayanaji (Shri Vishnu) is worshipped by offering tulsi leaves, mishri and soaked chana dal.
• People put pyaus (water tanks and pots) outside their houses for people to drink water in summer
• Aarti is performed.
