Engagement ceremony (Mudda/Tikka)

Preparations at the groom's side:

  • One ring with a moli tied on it.
  • One heavy saree or odhana for tikka. Sarees and accessories for the bride.
  • One kachola (a wide-mouthed silver container or bowl).
  • Four laddoos with varak (silver foil) are kept in kachola (bride's family removes a few laddoos and sends the kachola back).
  • Cloth cover for the kachola. Two godb one for mudda and one for tikka. In the godh 5 types of dry fruits - (almonds, pista, raisins, mishri and chuhara) and money or a gold coin is kept. Cashew nut and salted dry fruits are not kept for godh.
  • One garland for tikka ceremony. Aarti thali with roli, pearl for tilak, green moong, doob (grass), roli, rice, jaggery (gur) with silver foil and water.
  • One thali with dry fruits.
  • One thali with fruits.
  • Coloured hand towel for wiping hands after putting the tilak.
  • In a cloth bag money envelopes for varapheri, joshan and nevgan. Sangeet. (music cassettes)

Note: The dry fruits kept in the godh can be later on partaken by the family members. The money or gold coin is given to the bride.

Preparation at the bride's side:

  • One silver coin tied in a moli (coloured red thread) This is given to sister/bua who does the neg.
  • Money in a cloth bag (as desired) to be put in the kachola after removing the laddoos brought by the groom's side.
  • Teel for mother-in-law. (2 sarees & blouses)
  • Money and gifts for sister and daughters of the groom's family (as desired). Articles for the other relatives of the groom (optional). 
  • Money or silver articles for joshi and nevgi. Ladies from the bride's side give milni to the ladies
  • of the groom's side (generally milni is done with 4 rupees). Two chowkies (low stools) and 2 gaddies (cushions).
  • Small towels for cleaning the hands. One thali in which dry fruits and laddoos taken from the kachola will be kept.
  • Arrangements for snacks and lunch/dinner.
  • Arrangements for music.

Mudda Ceremony: Neg

  • The bride sits on a chowki facing east. The groom's sister/bua sits in front of her on a chowki.
  • The sister/bua puts the roli tilak for the bride. Then she puts rice/pearls.
  • The bride is made to wear the engageent ring (nowadays in some houses the groom puts on the ring instead of the sister).
  • The bride is given a little jaggry or mishri (mubmeetha karana) to eat.
  • The bride is given a godb for prosperity. The bride's mother gives a silver coin wrapped in moli to the sister/bua.
  • The bride gets up and does pranaam to the sister/bua who has done the neg and later on does pranaam to elders of the family.

Tikka Ceremony: Neg

  • After mudda - The sister puts the odhana around the bride's shoulder.
  • She garlands the bride. The bride is given the godh (a bag containing dry fruits) for prosperity and fulfillment. 
  • The bride is escorted to do pranaam to the elders of the family. 
  • During the neg, mangal geet (auspicious songs) are sung. 
  • After the ceremony snacks and tea are served.
