Shri Vaijnath Temple, Maharashtra (Jyotirlinga)
Parli is an ancient village situated near three rivers, Brahma, Venu and Saraswati. It is 26 kms from Ambajogai. A story is often heard that Yogeshwari of Ambejogai was to be married to Lord Vaidyanath of Parli. But by the time the wedding party reached, the auspicious time of marriage had passed, due to which people in favor of marriage turned into stone idols.
The second story takes place during the Amrit Manthan (churning for nectar) performed by the gods and demons. During the churning, 14 gems came out in it along with Dhanvantari and Amrit. When the demons ran to capture them, Vishnu hid the nectar and Dhanvantari in the linga of Lord Shiva. As soon as the demons tried to touch the linga, flames started coming out of it and the demons fled. But when the devotees of Lord Shankar touched the linga, nectar flowed from it. Due to the presence of nectar and Dhanvantari in Lingamurti, it is also known as Amriteshwara and Dhanvantari.
Another story is about the demon king Ravana. Once Ravana went to Mount Kailash and did severe penance to please Shiva. But when Shiva did not appear, he cut off each of his 10 heads and started offering it to the Shivling, when Ravana tried to offer his tenth head, Shiva appeared. Shiva restored all the heads of Ravana as before and granted him a boon. Ravana said that he wanted to take Lord Shiva to Lanka and Shiva agreed. But he said to Ravana, "You have to carry my linga with care and devotion, but don't put it down until you reach Lanka or wherever you put it, it will remain there".
At some point on the way, Ravana had a short stumbling block, so he called a shepherd to hold the linga. The shepherd could not hold the linga, so he placed it on the ground. Some versions say that this shepherd was Lord Vishnu. This place came to be known as Vaidyanatheshwara and the temple was called Vaijnath Temple.
Parli is also a meeting place for Shiva and Krishna devotees. Krishna's festivals are celebrated with Shankar at this holy place, water from Harihara Teerth is brought for daily worship of Vaidyanath.
